Household Leaks – Waste More Water Than You Think

Did you know that household leaks waste nearly 1 trillion gallons of water a year? The average household accounts for nearly 10,000 gallons of water every year. That’s a lot of water! Leaks can be fixed inside and outside your home to save valuable water and money all year long.

Common leaks are worn toilet flappers, dripping faucets and valves. These are typically easy to fix. Fixing these common household leaks will help you save on your water bill.

Identify a toilet leak by placing a drop of food coloring in the tank. If any color shows up in the bowl after just 10 minutes, you have a leak. More than likely it’s a worn flapper. Remember to flush after this experiment so you don’t stain your bowl.

You can usually tell when a faucet is leaking pretty easily, but be sure to check the gaskets and pipe fittings for any water on the outside of the pipe for any surface leaks.

Be sure to check your garden hose too. If it leaks at the connection to the spigot, more than likely you need to replace the nylon or rubber hose washer to make a tight connection.

Don’t let leaks go unchecked. Get them fixed right away before a small leak becomes a big hassle. In the long run, it will save you money on your water bill.
